On A Good Day (Remixes) - Oceanlab

Let's get into a little trance here. I haven't heard the original, but the one that got me going was the Above and Beyond Club Mix. Everyone already knows how good A&B are, so if you're wavering, hopefully that will push you over the edge. The track is just a great, euphoric trance song with a great vocal. Here it is:

On a Good Day (Above and Beyond Club Mix Radio Edit)

This next one is the Daniel Kandi Remix. Never heard the artist before. Here it is:

Deadmau5 Show

I went to this. It was AMAZING! Now you know where I live.

Woebegone (Flying Lotus' LikeWoe Remix) - The Long Lost

Hey everyone, I saw another Adult Swim bumper featuring that amazing song I showed you earlier. Here's the youtube video of it. Also, if you had wanted to hear the full track, click the title of this posting to hear it. I noticed this track has some samples from Parisian Goldfish, also by FlyLo. It's great.

Ghosts n Stuff (Nero Remix) - Deadmau5 feat. Rob Swire

Anyone who is anyone has heard the new vocal mix of Ghosts n Stuff with Rob Swire from Pendulum, but not everyone has heard this one. It's the Nero remix, and personally, I think Nero should have made the remix before the Rob Swire crap. Not that Rob's not talented, it's just bland, boring vocals that put the bitchen organs of Ghosts n Stuff on the back burner, leaving a tainted version of that masterpiece. I can't find a dub version of the Nero mix, and maybe there's not one, but I hope to God that there is.... For now, we'll just have to settle with this. It almost sounds like that life and death song by Good Charlotte. Not even comparable, though, shouldn't have brought that emo crap up.

9.23.2009

I Remember (J Majik and Wickaman Remix)

This is yet another great drum and bass remix of a classic progressive house track (just like the High Contrast Pjanoo Remix). This has been out for a while but I decided I would just share it anyway. Unlike the Pjanoo remix I posted earlier, this one is acutally sped up to fit the Drum N Bass tempo rather than slowed down. I'm having a problem finding the newest and best tracks, but at least if you haven't heard of it before, the really good ones are here.

9.11.2009

Etienne De Crecy - FUNK (Bloody Beetroots Mix)

To tell you the truth, I've never heard of either of these artists before. From what I've heard, The Bloody Beetroots are an EDM duo from Italy. I guess some Europe is just really good at this kind of stuff. Justice from France, and these guys from Italy. I really like this genre. Kind of grungy electro/house/dance. I think it's prettty good. The picture is of the Bloody Beetroots.

9.01.2009

Alex Gopher - Handguns (Dada Life Remix)

I wasn't too late on this one. Released in May of 2009, Handguns is a track which resides on its own EP with three remixes on Go 4 Music's label. The original mix is just mediocre and same with what I've heard of the other remixes. A friend showed me this track, and while I'm not the first to expose this track, at least I'm not years and years late (Benny Benassi played this at Global, at least in Denver). I've never heard of Alex Gopher, or Dada Life, who did the remix, but I'll definitely be checking more of their stuff out in the future. Anyway, have a listen, it almost sounds like Dirty Disco Youth meets Klaas, but who knows, ya know?

Moguai - Zyvox

First off, don't worry, THIS IS NOT DEADMAU5! This is realeased on Deadmau5' label called Mau5trap recordings but the artist is Moguai, who is well known for his 2002 track "U Know Y". He is from Recklinghausen, Germany, and he is actually a trance producer. I find it somewhat odd that Deadmau5 would produce a trance track on his label, that has the slower house tempo anyway. Weird. Anyway, have a listen. There is a Steve Duda (BSOD) remix as well, but I couldn't find that one.

8.26.2009

Justice - DVNO

DVNO by the notorious electro-rock duo, Justice, is about as good as it gets. Justice is known for creating their really grungy, over distorted sound, and while DVNO incorporates that, it is essentially a dance track. Incorporating house, funk, even touching on disco, DVNO is one of Justice's most played tracks. The lyrics are funky and match the track well, sung by Mehdi Pinson from the band Scenario Rock. They also have a really cool FX set on the vocals as well, it just adds this kind of sweet, crispy feel to them.

Another pro-point about this track is the AMAZING video. It imitates several 80's style TV show logos and intros, but with the lyrics placed where the name of the show would be. The video flows seamlessly, especially at the very end when the letters turn into a piano, didn't see that one coming. Amazing. Peep the video here.

8.13.2009

Deadmau5 - Catbread (Original Mix)

I've heard this track before, like the phone-quality 30 second sample on various websites, and it plays first (or at least it did) when you go to deadmau5.com, but I've finally found it! Deadmau5 - Catbread. It's a REALLY good electro house track, but surprisingly unknown and unpopular. Personally I think it's in his top 5, maybe even his top 3. I guess it's that detuned pluck around 2:00, it's just so sick. But don't go and do something stupid and listen to this on your shite laptop speakers or those whore stock iPod headphones. Hit this up on a nice sound system or a slick pair of headphones. Don't ruin it. You'll ruin it. Turn up the volume, turn up the bass and actually listen to this track for what it's worth. And whatever you do, DO NOT LISTEN TO IT ON YOUTUBE. It blows. That's why I post it here, so people can hear amazing music at a decent audio quality. Click the title and it should play right here. There, rant's over.

*The track is down for the time being, sorry, I'm going to upload it again soon*

The Flying Mau5

Hey everyone, this was posted only about a week ago, and it's pretty sick. Not much in the way of actual electronica, but still related. Deadmau5 has class.

8.11.2009

Give it Up for Me - Sydney Blu

I found this track just now, and you need to hear it. Surprisingly, this is the original mix. Deadmau5 did a mix of it, and he is even a big part of the album cover as you can see, but his mix doesn't stack up to the original. Just like all those gay remixes of Hey Baby that try to make it better, but the original just pwns the hell out of it. Just like this.

It gets good at about 2:15, but it really gets into full swing at 4:15.
Hot damn.

If you really really want to hear the Dead Mow Five remix then I guess I'll let you hear it:

Pjanoo (High Contrast Mix)

Hey guys, finally you get a dose of Drum N Bass, but the trance lovers will still get their novelty track: Pjanoo (High Contrast Remix) is the DnB remix of Eric Prydz' dance classic, Pjanoo. Compared to actual DnB, it's just okay, but it incorporates that amazing, flowing piano riff from Pjanoo that everyone loves and wants to dance to. Here it is.

Paul Keeley - King Scrubby

Track of the pseudo-week is King Scrubby by Paul Keeley, I don't know when this was released or when I first heard it. I think it was on the Gareth Emery Podcast. Anyway, Paul Keeley makes some really simple, but great sounding trance music. This song has strong underwater undertones with a really wacky name but is just so relaxed and chill and a pretty good track to dance to. Paul Keeley is a progressive producer from Montreal whose most well-known track has got to be Michael Cassette's Remix of A Sort of Homecoming. That track has an amazing bassline coupled with a really party style tech/trance riff. I'm showing you this equally as awesome but more obscure King Scrubby which definitely will give you trance chills.

By the way, Paul Keeley kind of looks like Jesus, don't you think?

RobertaFlack (Mike Slott's Other Mix)

Everyone already knows how good Flying Lotus is, with his unusual sounds with record static and the uneven beats and the whole lot. Today I picked up a copy of his L.A. EP 2x3 which I believe is his second remix album of tracks from his original Los Angeles album. I thought it would be so-so with just some attempts to remix Flying Lotus' amazing tracks, and yes, some of the tracks are just as boring as I thought. There is one, though, Mike Slott's mix of RobertaFlack which just really got to me. It has this uncanny ability to put images in my mind. I didn't even really enjoy the original that much.

This one, though, starts off with really great old-timey vocals and bells and chords and little dings, but then this glitch compu-speak synth comes in along with the signature broken beats just bringing back all those memories of those Jacek Yerka paintings I saw a while back. Peep some of them here, here, and here. Oh and here. Definitely that last one. But yeah, I really love that old-timey feel and the happy chords mixed with the twackin' beat and the future/past-esque glitch. Just amazing...

The first half of the next track, Secrets, sounds similar, but you'll have to find that yourself. I love how the song just portrays an alternate reality. Flying Lotus really is genius, because synthesizers produce sounds so sterile and clean, it must take a lot of work to grunge up and give personality to the sounds that FlyLo does, and it sounds great! Listen to the track, and maybe take a look at those paintings for maximum immersification.

Slip (Sebastian Leger Remix)

Everyone, if you haven't heard this, you need to. When I first heard this on a podcast, I could've sworn it was Justice. I hunted down the tracklist and found out it was the Sebastian Leger remix of Slip by, you guessed it, Deadmau5. My love of Deadmau5 aside, this is a great track, with a bass rhythym that is way out of control. Maybe a bit repetetive at some times, but Sebastian knows how to shake up a good classic.

Track of the Week - Moar Ghosts n Whatever

Moar Ghosts n Whatever

Deadmau5 - Moar Ghosts n Whatever

Artist: Deadmau5

Album: Unreleased

Year: 2009

Label: Unknown

-----------------------------------------

First off, if you don't like Deadmau5, screw you, get out. Just kidding. No, we love you. Anyway, if you don't like Deadmau5, then you will just have to deal with constant posts about him. Why? Because I love his music so much? Nah, the real reason is because he releases another one like EVERY OTHER WEEK. I could almost fill up tracks of the week with almost entirely his work, it's crazy.

Anyone who has ever heard Ghosts n Stuff will be in for a treat. Just like his other tracks like Complications, Secondary Complications, The Reward is Cheese, The Reward is More Cheese, Hi Friend, Bye Friend, now it's Moar Ghosts n Whatever. Man, I wish he cared enough to actualy name them better names. Just kidding, it's actually pretty freakin pimp. Anyway, this track is just another step past the amazing, epic, bassy organ chords from the original Ghosts into a land of pure electro with really danceable beats. Admitted, he probably could've done better on this song, but come on, gimme a break, he woth the "Beatport's Most Influential Producer Award" two years in a row. He rose from some Canadian kid who screwed around in FL Studio to an amazing world renowned DJ who is reinventing the live performance as we know it.

Fricken prodigy.

Honestly I havent't heard a bad song by Deadmau5 ever. So just peep the track here. Pay him money for it.

Track of the Week - 1983

1983
(click to play)

Artist: Flying Lotus

Album: 1983

Label: Plug Research

Year: 2006

Flying Lotus, (born Steven Ellison) is an experimental multi-genre music producer, disc jockey, and laptop musician from Winnetka, California. His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006. He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for the music in many of the segues of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, and he has also contributed remixes to fellow Plug Research artists, including Mia Doi Todd. His great-aunt is the late Alice Coltrane. He is affectionately referred to as FlyLo by fans and critics.
FlyLo
He signed with Warp Records in 2007, and, following his Warp debut—the six track Reset EP—released his second album, titled Los Angeles on June 10th, 2008.

Flying Lotus is commonly identified as a hip hop producer, but his style is drawn from many genres, including jazz, electronic, and Brazilian music. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposely slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere.

Ministry of Sound - Progression vol. 2

ZoomYesterday I got my hands on a copy of Ministry of Sound - Progression 2, and I've just been listening to it nonstop. This 2-disc album, mixed by Adam K and Hook N Sling is one of the biggest and best party albums to date. Relatively unknown because it was released on the MoS Australia label, it contains big name artists such as Chris Lake, JELO, Adam K, even Deadmau5.

The tracks on it are simply amazing. It has great party songs such as If You Knew (Feed me Remix) by Chris Lake featuring Nastala, genre-bending Slip by the illustrious Deadmau5, and good vocal tracks such as Need to Feel Loved (Adam K & Soha Vocal Mix) by Reflekt featuring Delline Bass. All classics.

What started out as a ‘discovery’ compilation in 2008 has now established itself as a musical expedition cutting through the noise of Electro House into something much deeper.

The second volume in the series, Progression 2 is an emotive compilation of tracks mixed by Adam K and Hook N Sling. Driven almost solely by word of mouth, 2008’s Progression spread through the underground club community just as the reign of the super club came to an end. Despite not having
been mixed by a headliner, it continues to win new followers over with it’s peerless musical vision 5 months on.

Progression 2 showcases an epic selection of atmospheric tracks and heralds in a new era in the constantly evolving underground club scene. This time around, with two of the scene’s most prominent figures at the helm to mix the album Progression 2 will be taking in a string of special club events across the country.

Changes (Dirty South Remix)

Hey, this is Kalnz with another delicious dose of EDM. This one's been out for a while, but I just recently discovered it recently. I know, redundant.

Anyway, the track is Changes (Dirty South Remix) by Chris Lake featuring Laura V. Pretty good track. Let's hit it up.

Another [adult swim] Bumper

I'm sorry for posting another one of these again, but I just found another one, and the music is just as sick. Again, I think it's by Flying Lotus, but I'm not sure. If I ever get a hold of these tracks, I will definitely be posting them here. EDIT: The song is Woebegone by The Long Lost but I can't get my hands on it yet. Will do.

For now, unfortunately, you'll have to deal with this low-quality YouTube version:

Sorry about the last 3 posts being about the Adult Swim Bumpers, but ya gotta admit, they're great. I'll be posting something else soon.

Flying Lotus

I have recently discovered an artist called Flying Lotus. Pretty freaking good.

He's released several albums including seven EP's, six singles, and three full albums. He is well known for his contributions to the Adult Swim commercial bumpers, yet is completely uncredited. You can read more in detail about him here.

Meanwhile, have a listen to a couple of his more popular songs:
1983 is a good one, but you gotta let it get past the intro.

Adult Swim Commercial Bumper

I saw this video while watching [adult swim] one night, and the music was just so good, so I tracked down the video, posted it on youtube and then on the blog. It's crappy quality, but the music is great. I really want to find it.

News

You know, after many months of "DJ's Block" I've finally began to work on a track that is just tumbling down the proverbial hill of awesome... I've just been so stuck, but now there's something to work on. Now, the people of the world can finaly be expecting a release.

You have been warned.

Track of the Week of 6.15.09 - Vundernug's Nasty Stuff (A.D. Remix)

The track of the week this week is a mix of Vundernug's "Nasty Stuff" with A.D. ElectroMC in the mix. This was part of a remix contest with about 40 entries (mine included), but seriously, this guy deserves to win... Never heard of Vundernug? It's because you haven't. Even once the remix contest was live on the 'net, a Google search of "Vundernug" yielded no results. Anyway, you can hear a crap quality, 128kbps version of the original track here. It's the only one I could find, sorry.
Anyway, I don't know much about A.D. other than that he's from Dallas and he's pretty good at rapping. The added vocals are proably why he won. Just peep the track through this fancy built in SoundCloud Player, or you can just hit up the link at the top of this post to go to the official page for the track. You can leave comments here, or there, whatev.
Just bringin' you some of the best in underground EDM/TripHop.

(By the way, not to toot my own horn or anything, but if you want to hear my mix, you can peep it here.)

"Moar Ghosts n Whatever"

Ok, I know that I've been posting a lot of Deadmau5 stuff lately, but not only does this video contain a really good remix of a classic deadmau5 song, but it addresses underground DJ's and popular ones too, mentioning the dynamic of good artists. Deadmau5 seems to be getting more and more angry at the mainstream music scene, and how they promote really bad music.

He's a firin' his laser.

Deadmau5 xfer Sample CD

For those of you who like Deadmau5 and like to craft electronic music, but are simply stumped as to how he does it, this will give you a head start.

The Deadmau5 xfer Sample CD has over 3300 samples and one-shots (555 MB) that you can load straight into whatever software you use. They are simply .wav files, so you don't have to worry about compatibility. Whether you use Ableton, FL, Reason, Cubase, or anything else, these will work.

Despite the large amount of sample CDs out there, we saw a niche for one geared towards building blocks of EDM with a twist - this one is royalty-free, so it can be used in original productions with no fear of legal repercussions from the original artists who often are sampled on other CD libraries", says Steve. "We tried to make an assortment featuring a variety of sound sources, which aren't overproduced so they can fit into a production workflow without stamping their own flavor on a mix and being overly-recognizable.

I picked this up a couple weeks ago and gave them a try. Most of the samples are one-shots, with just a few golden tonal sounds such as moog. A lot of these samples sound just like the presets that you can find in VSTi's, so you can't really tap into the "magic" of Deadmau5, but you can at least use some of his signature sounds. The best part for me at least, is that there is a plethora of pre-mixed sounds like claps, snares, and kicks, so you don't have to be stuck with the really crappy drum presets found in most programs. A lot of the samples are pretty much identical, too, with very slight differences.

Overall I'd say it's definitely a pretty cool collection, but its value is a little shaky once you consider the steep $99 price tag.

For more details about the samples, check out its product page on KillThe8.

Very First Track of the Week - 6.8.09

I think I'll do a "Track of the Week" and maybe if this site gets more popular, it might be track of the day. Either way, the first track I chose was created by Ambary, a friend of mine, and an excellent producer of Ambient, Glitch, and IDM. The track is called It Seems To Be (Raining), and it's a great ambient track to start off the site. Yes, it's not quite "dance" music, but dont worry, we'll get there.

Very First Post

Welcome to kalnz' EDM blog. If you don't know what EDM is you're really missing out. EDM is electronic dance music. This special brand of music incorporates tonal elements previously unavailable to humans before the dawn of modern technology. EDM contains sound previously unheard by human ears, and therefore creates a unique, blissful experience that only EDM can provide. Whether you like House, Tech, Trance, Drum N Bass, or any derivative thereof, us listeners unite under one idea: audial euphoria.

This music helps disconnect oneself from the realities of this tangible world and connects us to a unpercieved universe where sounds collide and create an ecstasy that engulfs one's consciousness. Anyway, that's my attempt at describing EDM. Either you like it or you don't. Some say it is too repetitive, but those people haven't experienced it in its fullness, they haven't gone to the places that EDM can take you.

In this blog, I will try to appease EDM fans by bringing you the latest news, reviews, links, events, tracks, and everything about the various genres of EDM, from Drum N Bass, to Minimal, to House, Trance, and Breakbeats. I'll review the latest releases from the best in electronic dance music (even podcasts!) If no one reads this blog, whatever. I'll still have a great record of the most popular choons ever released.
